Te Kāpehu Whetū Tāmaki proudly marks an important milestone as it welcomes its
inaugural cohort of ākonga and whānau, grounded in kaupapa Māori values and guided
by a commitment to Te Ao Māori, academic excellence and high-performance sport.
“Te Kāpehu Whetū Tāmaki represents guidance, aspiration, and direction,” said Dr Will
Flavell, Pouhere o Te Kāpehu Whetū Tāmaki.
“Our vision is to ensure every ākonga knows who they are, where they
come from, and where they are heading – supported by strong relationships with
whānau and community and our three pou, Kia Māori, Kia Mātau and Kia Tū Rangatira
ai,” Favell said.

The journey begins with a formal pōwhiri hosted by Ngāti Whātua Orakei,
acknowledging the importance of entering the rohe with respect and intent.
This moment establishes the foundation for strong relationships between Te Kāpehu Whetū
Tāmaki, Ngāti Whātua Orakei, ākonga, and whānau – relationships that will be
nurtured throughout the learning journey.
Te Kāpehu Whetū Tāmaki has been established to provide a learning environment
where ākonga are supported to thrive academically, culturally, and personally.
The kura places mātauranga Māori at the centre of learning, while equipping students with the
skills, confidence, and critical thinking needed to navigate the wider world.
