Thousands of Māori voters are streaming into advance polling booths across Rotorua as the push to cast early ballots gains momentum, backed by newly released Electoral Commission figures showing total Māori enrolment nationwide has crossed 600,000.

With early voting underway, polling places throughout Rotorua are seeing steady queues as whānau turn out to make their mark ahead of election day. The influx reflects a broader surge in participation across both the Māori and general electoral rolls.

Māori Enrolment Breakdown Nationwide

According to figures released by Te Kaitiaki Take Kōwhiri (Electoral Commission) on Oct 27, 2026, total Māori enrolments have grown by more than 33,000 compared to the 2023 General Election:

Māori on General Roll276,712 (49%)271,094 (45%)
Total Enrolled Māori567,012600,110

The data highlights a significant shift toward the Māori roll, which now accounts for 55% of all enrolled Māori voters, up from 51% in 2023.

Rotorua Māori Enrolment Breakdown

At the beginning of the month, 8,056 Māori were enrolled to vote in the Rotorua general electorate, compared to 15,779 Māori in the same area eligible to vote in the Waiariki Māori electorate. This accounts for more than 50 percent of the electorate’s voters compared to the last general election. And with final enrolment numbers being processed both numbers look set to increase contributing to the surge in Māori across Rotorua lining up to cast their votes.

EasyVote Digital Slips Dispatched

To support the high volume of advance voters, the Electoral Commission issued a further 108,000 EasyVote digital voting slips on yesterday (Oct 28, 2026)

  • Target Recipients: Voters who registered for the first time or updated their enrolment details between writ day (Oct 04, 2026) and 6PM on Oct 22, 2026, and supplied an email address.
  • Sender Address: no-reply@easy.vote.nz.
  • Prior Mailout: Physical and digital EasyVote cards were previously delivered to all voters registered prior to writ day on Oct 04, 2026.

Voters taking their EasyVote card or digital slip to any advance voting booth in Rotorua can complete their vote in minutes, reducing queue times during peak hours.

Electoral Integrity Enforcement

In a separate announcement on Oct 28, 2026, the Electoral Commission confirmed it has referred two individuals to the New Zealand Police following public claims that they had cast multiple ballots.

Under Section 215 of the Electoral Act 1993, voting more than once in an election is an offence. The Commission reiterated that strict audit mechanisms are in place across all polling places to detect and investigate dual voting, adding that no further public comment will be made while the matters are under police investigation.
