Whakaata Māori has today announced that its long-standing Kaihautū, Shane Taurima, will be stepping down from the leadership role at the end of this year.
Taurima, who has led the national indigenous media organisation for almost eight years, has accepted a new executive position as Pou Matua, Group Chief Executive, at the Māori-owned technology and infrastructure group, Tū Ātea. He will commence his new role in February 2027.
Whakaata Māori Chair Jamie Tuuta paid tribute to Taurima’s tenure, noting a period of significant evolution for the organisation.
“Over almost eight years, Shane has led Whakaata Māori with a clear focus on our people and the kaupapa we are here to serve,” Tuuta said.
“Whakaata Māori has become a financially stronger, digital-first Indigenous media organisation. More people are consuming our content than ever before, and we better understand the impact our mahi is having.”
Tuuta highlighted the organisation’s strong position moving forward, noting the $8 million commitment from the Government’s 2026 Budget to accelerate digital development.
“The next Kaihautū will inherit strong foundations and have the opportunity to work with the Board and our team to shape what comes next,” Tuuta added.
Taurima reflected on his time at the helm as the “greatest privilege” of his executive career.
“Everything we have done has ultimately been in service of the same kaupapa: kia mauriora te reo,” Taurima said.
Addressing his move to Tū Ātea, he drew a parallel between the two organisations. “I see them as different branches of the same rākau (tree), nourished by the same pakiaka (roots): our whakapapa and aspirations for mana motuhake and tino rangatiratanga.”
Taurima confirmed he remains fully committed to his current duties at Whakaata Māori until his departure at the end of the year.
The Whakaata Māori Board will initiate the recruitment process for a new Kaihautū immediately.###

Shane Taurima joined Whakaata Māori as Deputy Chief Executive in September 2018, serving as Acting Chief Executive from December 2018. He was appointed to the permanent role of Kaihautū in May 2019. His current term was scheduled to conclude in 2029.
