Television and radio networks are set for an influx of political campaigning following the formal signing of the election writ at Government House today.
Her Excellency The Rt Hon Dame Cindy Kiro, Governor-General, officially directed the Electoral Commission to conduct the 2026 General Election on Sat, Nov 7, 2026. Under electoral law, the signing of the writ officially authorises candidate and party advertising to begin on broadcast channels.
Chief Electoral Officer Karl Le Quesne emphasized the sign-off as a crucial constitutional milestone. “It sets out the dates for candidate nominations to close, election day, and the date the writ must be returned showing the successful electorate candidates,” he said.
Key Timelines & Deadlines
• Electoral Roll Printing: The main electoral rolls close for printing at midnight tonight. Those who enrol after tonight and up until midnight on Sun, Oct 25, 2026, will cast special declaration votes.
• Broadcast Advertising: Campaign advertisements are officially permitted on television and radio starting today.
• Nominations Deadline: Registered parties must submit party lists and electorate candidate nominations, and individual electorate nominations must be completed, by 12:00 PM on Thu, Oct 8, 2026.
• Official Candidate List: A complete listing of candidates and parties is expected to be published online by 2:00 PM on Fri, Oct 9, 2026.
• Return of Writ: The official return of the writ showing elected electorate candidates is due by Thu, Dec 3, 2026, provided no recount is required.
