Koroneihana 2026: Your essential guide to this week’s events and news at Tuurangawaewae 

Koroneihana 2026 officially begins today at Tūrangawaewae Marae in Ngāruawāhia, marking the start of a significant five-day programme that celebrates the leadership of Te Arikinui Kuini Nga wai hono i te po. This year’s event, running from Wednesday, 2 September through to Sunday, 6 September, welcomes iwi and visitors from across the motu to honour the Kiingitanga.

The proceedings open this morning with the Kawe Mate o Tainui waka. Over the coming days, the marae will host a series of traditional protocols and commemorative events reflecting the unity and heritage of the movement.

Event Schedule:

  • Wednesday, 2 September: Kawe Mate o Tainui waka (9:00 am).
  • Thursday, 3 September: Kawe Mate o te Motu (9:00 am and 1:30 pm).
  • Friday, 4 September: Whā Pito o te Ao (9:00 am) and Te Kāwanatanga (1:30 pm).
  • Saturday, 5 September: Te Kauwhau a Te Arikinui.
  • Sunday, 6 September: He Manawa Toki Tū Concert.

News Breaks Schedule:

Also, this year, a collaborative Māori media effort led by Aukaha News, in partnership with Taiuru News, Pūkāea, Tuia News, Te Ao Māori and Te Karere will be broadcasting daily news breaks from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm, Wednesday to Friday ensuring that those unable to attend in person can follow the key moments of the coronation.
